Namecoin

Namecoin is an open-source blockchain project focused on improving the decentralization, security, privacy, and censorship resistance of Internet infrastructure. The project was designed to extend blockchain technology beyond digital currency by applying it to decentralized naming systems, Internet identities, and other infrastructure components. Namecoin operates as a key/value pair registration and transfer system based on Bitcoin technology. It allows users to securely register and transfer names while attaching data to those names. The network also has its own digital currency, namecoin (NMC), which is used within the Namecoin ecosystem. One of Namecoin's primary applications is decentralized DNS. Through its .bit naming system, Namecoin provides an alternative approach to conventional domain-name infrastructure, with the goal of making websites and online identities more resistant to censorship and centralized control. The project also supports decentralized identity functionality. Users can associate identity information such as GPG and OTR keys, email addresses, Bitcoin addresses, and Bitmessage addresses with a Namecoin identity. Namecoin technology can additionally be used for decentralized TLS certificate validation backed by blockchain consensus. Namecoin was the first fork of Bitcoin and was an early implementation of merged mining and decentralized DNS. The project also addressed what is commonly known as Zooko's Triangle, the challenge of creating a naming system that is simultaneously secure, decentralized, and human-meaningful. The Namecoin project continues to develop and research applications involving decentralized Internet infrastructure, privacy, identity, DNS, and cryptographic security. Its recent technical work includes research and development related to decentralized TLS and the potential implications of post-quantum cryptography. Namecoin is developed as an open-source community project, with participation spanning software development, documentation, research, marketing, and community activities. The project maintains public development resources and community channels where contributors can participate in ongoing work. Through its focus on decentralized naming, identity, privacy, and censorship-resistant Internet infrastructure, Namecoin represents an early and continuing application of blockchain technology beyond financial transactions.
